Deerhound Club Limited Show (Northern) 2014 Critique

Thanks again to the show organisers for a really well run show.  Excellent venue, good catering and good facilities. The in/out marquee was invaluable at the beginning of the day when we had to dodge the showers. Thankfully the sun came out which allowed almost all of the judging to take place outside. The show continued into the afternoon with the fun classes judged by Johnny Morgan which gave the show a lovely friendly atmosphere. Thanks again to the stewards Peter Grant and Vicky Lindsay and last but by no means least, thanks to all the exhibitors for your entries.  It was a pleasure to go over so many fit and well-muscled hounds. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

PD (1) 1. Seamans’ Arrachogaidh Bhadenach. 10mth old.  Well angulated puppy with curves in all the right places. Good coat.  Unfortunately a little unsettled today - maybe because of the marquee. Moved OK but could benefit from more ringcraft training.  Reserve BPIS.

JD (2) 1. McIntyre’s Almondbank Lead on McDuff. 19mth dark hound. Masculine head and expression. Good dark eye. Seemed a little unsettled when under the marquee but settled better when running outside. Plenty of bone whilst still retaining typical deerhound curves. Movement straight and true when settled. 2. Foy’s Dorrator Franklin. Different type from 1. Lighter in bone and coat colour. Good depth of chest and strong neck.  Well angulated front but would prefer a little more bend of stifle. Movement a little unsettled today.

Special Beginners (1,1) None present.

PGD (5,1) 1. Cartmell’s Cusidh Drawing Down the Sun.  Shapely, dark dog. Good dark eye and typical expression. Balanced angulation fore and aft. Excellent bend of stifle and well-muscled quarters.  Moved well with drive.  A fit and masculine hound.  Reserve Best Dog. 2.Sharp’s Rosslyn Qonor. Another very masculine hound of slightly heavier build than 1. Good depth of chest and correct front assembly. Correct sloping front pasterns. Moved well but with slightly less drive than 1. 3. McKinnon’s Moireach Osprey of Fingon.

OD (4,1) 1. Cartmell’s Cusidh Homecoming. Mature, almost 5yr old hound. Good dark, crisp coat. Fit, well-muscled and looks like he could do the job for which the breed was intended. Good length in his ribbing. Strong, arched loin. Balanced, powerful angulation fore and aft. Moved very well. Best Dog and RBIS. 2. Anderson & White’s Gentiehun Desert Orchid. 3yr old hound. Preferred the much darker, crisper coat of 1. Good body and depth of chest. Good angulation fore and aft. Would prefer more slope to the front pasterns which appeared a little too upright today. Well-muscled, strong quarters. Moved well. 3. Sharp’s Rosslyn Qonor.

Veteran Dog (3,1) 1. Swanson’s Menteith Declan. Almost 8yrs old. Fit, well-muscled hound. Finer type but still no doubt that he is a male. Typical head an expression. Good curvy outline with balanced angulation. Moved very well with good drive. 2. Wright’s Hearthstane Glengarrioch. 7yrs old. Heavier type than 1. Very well coated with a good mane which is sadly absent on many deerhounds. Balanced angulation.  Unfortunately he paced most of the time and was not as powerful on the move as one.

PB (4) 1. Robertson’s Chuilinn Berengaria. 7mth old dark, feminine hound. Good bone for her age. Correct, crisp cost. Well angulated. Balanced fore and aft. Feminine head and expression. Good bend of stifle. Moved very well. BPIS. 2. Cunningham’s Chuilinn Ballad. Another nice puppy. Litter sister to 1 and very similar comments apply. She has slightly less body than her sister and was unsettled on the move today. 3. Davis’ Marivon Florence.

JB (1) 1. Gillie’s n Dorrator Garvey. Almost 15mths old. Dark, feminine hound. Typical head and expression. Good curvy outline with balanced angulation fore and aft and good straight front. Moved well.

Special Beginners B (8,2) 1. Swanson’s Cotherstone Brogue. Dark shapely youngster. Good balanced angulation with correct bend of stifle. Good depth of chest. Good width behind.  Fit and well-muscled and moved with drive. 2. Crossan & Foote’s Cusidh Eilid. Just 1 day between the birth date of 1 and 2. Shapely dark hound. Not as much coat as 1. Well angulated with correct sloping front pasterns. Moved well. 3. Senior’s Killoeter Nina.

PGB (15.6) 1. Robertson’s Chuilinn Whisper. 2yr old hound. Substantial girl but still feminine. Good crisp coat. Curves in all the right places from her head to her tail. Typical head and expression. Fit and well-muscled with a broad and powerful rear which she used very well on the move. Best Bitch and BIS. 2. Davis’ Kilbourne Nimble at Marivon. Almost 3yr old hound. Lighter coloured than 1. Pleasing feminine outline. Balanced angulation. Not quite as much drive on the move as 1. 3. Crossan & Foote’s Fintralgor Red Red Rose.

OB (12,5) 1. Cartmell’s Brylach Over the Broomstick with Cusidh. Rising 3yr old hound. Long cast hound with length correctly in her ribbing. Feminine head and expression. Good angulation fore and aft with powerful, well-muscled hind quarters. Moved well. 2. Randall’s Gentiehun Rosemary. 4yr old hound. Different type from 1. Longer, light grey coat with correct texture. Feminine head and expression. Good depth of chest and balanced angulation. Moved well but just a little closer behind than 1. 3. MacBean’s Ennsai at Killoeter.

Veteran B (8,3) Great to see a good number of healthy veteran bitches. All bar one in this class were over 9yrs old and a credit to the breed and their owners. 1. Cartmell’s Riding the Wind with Cusidh. Almost 10yr old dark hound. Very well-muscled and in excellent condition for her age. Good feet and correctly sloping front pasterns. Balanced angulation. Moved with power and drive. She looked like she was thoroughly enjoying herself. Reserve Best Bitch and Best Veteran in Show. 2. Morton and Morgan’s Cotherstone Devil in Drag. 9yr old. Another very fit and well-muscled dog for her age. Curvy outline with balanced angulation. Moved well but not quite as much reach and drive as 1. 3. Cunningham’s Canishurn Zena.
